CityClimate meets CreativeCoding (CCmCC)

City Climate meets CreativeCoding was an artistic-scientific research experiment on climate, data and sustainable urban planning.

The innovative collaboration brought together international artists, data analysts and data curators to create ground-breaking data art projects.

This unique initiative was inspired by existing digital tools developed by the City Science Lab (CSL), such as CoSI (Cockpit Social Infrastructure), DIPAS (Digital Participatory System), CUT (Connected Urban Twin) and PaKOMM (Mixed Reality for Participatory Urban Planning).

The project began in November 2022 with a kick-off workshop at which participants from various fields familiarized themselves with the lab tools, presented initial ideas on the topic and came together in teams. Over the following months, the teams worked together to develop project prototypes. These were evaluated by an external jury and the other participants.

Three projects were selected and given a budget for implementation in the second phase of the program. The established thematic focuses dealt with the possibilities of algorithmic agents for solving environmental problems (Tree Planting Robots), an AI as a political representative of cross-species consciousness (Citizen A.I.) and the visualization of possible catastrophic future scenarios for HafenCity (GOOD BYE HAMBURG), each interweaving research data, modeling and fictional elements. In the form of installations, interventions, participatory performances and theatrical productions, the results were presented in September 2023 alongside other artistic and scientific contributions as part of a public Art Science Festival at the Jupiter Campus.

CityClimate meets CreativeCoding was a cooperation between the City Science Lab (CSL) of HafenCity University Hamburg and the German Federal Cultural Foundation. The Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS) supported the experiment with its climate expertise. CityClimate meets CreativeCoding was evaluated by the Institute for Transformative Sustainability Research (IASS).
